Dry Ice Blasting is a new industrial cleaning process in which particles of solid carbon dioxide gas -dry ice- are propelled at high velocities to impact and clean a surface.
These particles are accelerated to supersonic speeds by compressed air and delivered via a handheld or robotized nozzle at the surfaces to be cleaned. Most industrial applications are able to use standard shop air, in the 80-100 psi range, or compressed air delivered via a separate, dedicatated mobile air compressor.
The dry ice blasting process creates a tension wave between the contaminant and the underlying substrate. This wave has enough energy to overcome the adhesion or bonding strength and literally pops the contamination from the substrate off from the inside out.
Dry Ice Blasting is different to other shotblasting methods, -it does not replace traditional shotblasting methods,- as the blasting media particles actually disappear -sublime back to gaseous carbon dioxide- upon impacting the surface being cleaned. The process is non abrasive as with other blasting methods, bead, sand or grit, and can be used in industrial cleaning applications where media entrapment would create problems and, or damage the surfaces being cleaned. An example of this is a printing press. -left-
